GUTTA Meet and greet

If you are NOT from GUTTAA I'll take a second to explain what this is and what it means... I'm joining this fun little (okay not really "little" but it sounds cuter that way) blog hop for agent-seeking writers like myself. It contains contests and critiques and all-around funness (yes I made that up). This is the "get to know you" part where I try to make myself not look utterly boring.

 Look! I can fly....

Anyway, my name is Stacey, I'm 23. My 4 year anniversary is this month (yes that means I got married at 19). My father is a Magician/balloon man... no, seriously http://www.extremeballoons.com/. I read the Harry Potter series when I was 20 (what took me so long? Well that's a story for another time) and that's what initially inspired me to write.  My novel WHISPERS OF DISASTER is a YA fantasy and is my first novel... but I've been working on it for 3 years. It's been an uphill battle to get it to a publishable quality, but I am completely in love with it.

Where do you write?

Wherever I feel like it. I have a desk but rarely use it (it's currently coved by stacks of paper, books and rat food (yes, rat food). I'm not sure you can even see the desk at this point. At home I usually write on the couch, comfy right? But I like to write at Panera too.

-Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see?

A rat cage. He doesn't have a name, if anyone would like to give him one, feel free. (The last one was named "Dinner" because he was supposed to snake food but we kept him (he died last year), this one we only kept because the snake wouldn't eat him. So I guess Monty (the python) saved this one.

-Favorite time to write?

Um. Whenever. My schedule always changes so it's tough to have any one time to write.

-When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence?

I write with music sometimes, the TV on sometimes, random people talking around me sometimes(like at Panera or when my father-in-law has poker.. this one can get annoying because the random people often try to talk to me.) I'm good at zoning out. I can read and write just about anywhere.

-What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it?

Latest? Hmm. Not sure which one is my "latest". I'm going to be writing a novel about a teen prostitute, that one came about gradually.
I'm about half way done with a fantasy romance which I day-dreamed up while on the back of my hubbies motorcycle (hour long ride to a casino. Yeah, I'm a rebel)

So yeah, that's me. I don't have many writerly friends so I'd love to be BFF's with some of you =) Can't wait to get started!

  2. Great post! I've always wanted to fly. And I'm impressed with anyone who can tune out noises and people to write. I can do it to read, but unfortunately I'm a silence kind of writer girl. Looking forward to seeing more of you at GUTGAA:)

  5. You have a rat as a pet? That is hilarious. Especially since my husband is a pest control guy and he kills them for a living! Gah...sorry. I bet your rat is delightful though ;)

  6. ha, he's more of a sqatter than a pet. Dinner was a pet, this one we just can't get rid of ;-) He'll have a home til we find something else to do with him though.

  8. Your pic is awesome! And I'm in my mid-twenties and still haven't read beyond the first two Harry Potter books, so it's all good. Best of luck in GUTGAA!

  9. I didn't pick them up until I was 20. Once I did (and got past the first chapter or two of the first book) I read all 7 in three weeks.

    I'm a MAJOR fan.

That's more or less what I mean. I was way late to the banwagon.

  10. Hi Stacey! My name is Lisa Ann, and I'm one of the first-round GUTGAA judges. I love the fact that you brainstorm on the back of a motorcycle, and best of luck to you! I can't wait to read everyone's submissions!

    1. Why yes, yes I am :-) I just wish that were a 14 on the jersey (the pic is a few years old now). I have season tickets this year (we'll be going to 4 or 5 of the games, selling the rest). I love my Bengals!

  15. Nice to meet you! So cool that you have a pet rat! Rats feature prominently in my WIP, and my heroine adopts a rat and names him Ratticus.

  19. I got married at 19, too. Turned 20 a few months later, but had to laugh about being a teenage bride. Never saw that one coming. Love YA fantasy, it's awesome. Writing always does seem to be an uphill battle though, doesn't it. What's up with that? It was nice to meet you and hopefully, I'll see you around :D

  20. How about Dessert as a name for your pet rat, you know in memory of dinner :)

Nice to meet you and good luck with GUTGAA.

  21. I got married at 18 and had rats as pets growing up. We are totally going to be BFF's! I'm loving your idea about the teenage prostitute. It sounds way interesting. Love your blog, it's super cute. Anything that's black and pink is good to me. :) Happy GUTGAA!

  22. Nice to meet you Stacey. I think it's very cool that you got married at 19 and keep pet rats. You seem like a really interesting person, and I'd love to know more about your YA fantasy.

I saw your post on Anabel 's blog, about joining her critique group. I just contacted her about joining too, and wanted to say hello to you.

As I said to Anabel, I think sharing something to be critiqued is a daunting prospect, and for me I'd like to share my work with someone I've built up a relationship with beforehand. I also think having support prior to critiquing is important, as you can discuss ideas and encourage each other when writing is difficult.

My email is claredugmore @ gmail . com

I'll message you shortly about the critique group. :D
